Welcome to the Diabetes Research Alliance website.
The Diabetes Research Alliance was set up in 2008 as a subsidiary of the Diabetes Federation of Ireland, the national charity supporting people with diabetes in Ireland.
The Diabetes Research Alliance has the specific aim of promoting, supporting and funding research related to the causes, prevention and cure of diabetes. It will focus on increasing the level of Irish based diabetes research and will primarily be a funder for all types of diabetes research through the provision of grants.
Why Me? The Diabetes – Genes Autoimmunity and Prevention study may help find the answer.

Currently Funded Research
- The Galway Diabetic Foot Study: Epidemiology, Cost, Feasibility, and Implications for Clinical Practice and Policy. This 3-year research study will find out how common foot problems are in a group of patients with diabetes from the West of Ireland –including finding out how many already have diabetic foot complications and how many develop new complications over two years. [More Info]
- Adipocyte Size and Type 2 Diabetes in Obesity; A Study of Patients undergoing Bariatric Surgery. The project will examine how fat cells function and how the liver stores fat. The project may ultimately lead to identifying how and what fat cells need to do to protect from the harmful effects of obesity. This might lead to new treatments which could improve fat function and so help prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes. [More Info]
